Carved in solid wood
These plaques begin with solid, kiln-dried mahogany. Hand carving creates the raised and recessed features that give an insignia, seal, or custom design its dimension. Hand painting adds color to the carved composition.
The finished appearance combines the material, the carving, and the coatings. Wood provides the body; carving establishes the relief; colored lacquer supplies the painted areas; protective lacquer provides the gloss finish.
Clear and pigmented lacquer serve different purposes: clear lacquer protects without supplying the design’s painted colors, while pigmented lacquer contains color. A primer or sealer, where used, prepares the surface beneath those visible coatings.
Make the design appropriate to the occasion
Request a military emblem, agency seal, organizational logo, custom outline, or presentation design. Round, shield, badge, and other custom shapes can be considered, subject to practical review.
Personalization can include names, ranks, service dates, unit identification, and dedication wording. Inscription options include carving, an etched brass plate, or a separately applied UV-printed decal, according to your requirements. Ask for your preferred option to be included in the quote.

Mahogany plaques are for indoor use only. Keep dry. The protective finish does not make the plaque suitable for outdoor installation.

Frequently asked questions
Will a painted plaque still show the mahogany grain?
That depends on the design and how much of the surface receives colored coating. If visible wood is important, include that preference in your request.
Are “acrylic” and “lacquer” opposite types of finish?
Not necessarily. Some lacquers contain acrylic resins. MilitaryPlaques.com uses lacquer for the colored coatings and protective finishing on these traditional mahogany plaques.
Can you fit a long dedication onto a small plaque?
Submit the wording with your approximate dimensions. Lettering needs enough space to remain readable, so the layout may require a larger plaque or a shorter inscription.
