Marine Barracks Washington Seal

Marine Barracks Washington was established in 1801; it has been the residence of the Marines Commandant since 1806. The location of "8th and I"--as it is called--was based on both strategic and national concerns. President Thomas Jefferson and Marines Corps commandant, Lieutenant Colonel William Ward Burrows, chose the location because it was close to the Washington Navy Yard and a short march from the Capitol.
