U.S. veterans' services have developed over time to support people who served and their families. Recognition of that service can also be personal: an inscription, photograph or display that records the individual's contribution.

Key Milestones in Veterans' Services

The Veterans Administration was established in 1930 to coordinate veterans' programs. The Cabinet-level Department of Veterans Affairs took effect on March 15, 1989. VA's responsibilities include health care, benefits and national cemeteries.

For the history of these programs and current benefits information, use the official VA history overview and VA website.

Recognize the Individual's Service

When preparing a retirement or appreciation plaque, confirm the recipient's name, rank or title, unit and dates. Choose wording that reflects their own contribution and review the design with the person arranging the presentation.
