The United States Coast Guard (USCG) is a part of the military of the United States combining aspects of a maritime law enforcement agency, an armed force, and a federal body. The Coast Guard has eleven statutory missions: Migrant Interdiction, Defense Readiness, Drug Interdiction, Ports, Waterways and Coastal Security, Other Law Enforcement, Search and Rescue, Aids to Navigation, Marine Safety, Living Marine Resources, Marine Environmental Protection, and Ice Operations.
The USCG has command responsibilities for the U. S. Maritime Defense Zone, countering potential threats to American coasts, ports, and inland waterways through numerous port-security, harbor-defense, and coastal-warfare operations and exercises.

The Coast Guard is one of the oldest organizations of the federal government and, until the Navy Department established in 1798, it served as the nation's only armed force afloat. The service has continued to protect the nation throughout our long history and have served proudly in every one of the nation's conflicts. The Coast Guard's national defense responsibilities remain one of its most important functions even today.
In times of peace the Coast Guard operates as part of the Department of Homeland Security, serving as the nation's front-line agency for enforcing our laws at sea, protecting our coastline and ports, and saving life. In times of war, or on direction of the President, the Coast Guard serves under the Navy Department.

The Coast Guard’s philosophy is to be SEMPER PARATUS (ALWAYS READY) against all threats and all hazards. The Coast Guard Auxiliary is an integral part of that philosophy and the Coast Guard Forces. The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary was established on June 23, 1939 by an act of Congress as the United States Coast Guard Reserve and re-designated as the Auxiliary on February 19, 1941.
It is a volunteer uniformed component of the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and works with the rest of the Coast Guard in all of its varied missions with the exception that Auxiliary Members (Auxiliarists) may only support, but not directly participate in, the Coast Guard's military and law enforcement missions. Auxiliarists are not allowed to carry any weapons while serving in any Auxiliary capacity. As of November 18, 2007 there were 30,074 active Auxiliarists.

With nearly 28,000 members, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary actively provides safety patrols on area waterways and regularly meets with the boating public at marinas and in classrooms. We also directly assist the U.S. Coast Guard in non-law enforcement programs such as search and rescue, and marine environmental protection.

In the 1960's, the Coast Guard began searching for a replacement facility, one that could grow as needed and accommodate modern aircraft. In 1968, the Department of Defense agreed to allow the Coast Guard to utilize Otis Air Force Base on Cape Cod for a new Coast Guard Air Station. Air Station Cape Cod was officially established on August 29, 1970.
Protecting the coast of the United States from New York City to the Canadian border, Air Station Cape Cod has grown into one of the most active and essential air stations in the service. Air Station Cape Cod crews fly both HH-60J "JayHawk" helicopters and HU-25 "Falcon" jets to perform a variety of Coast Guard missions. Our primary mission, Search and Rescue (SAR), involves the protection of life and property in the offshore areas from the Canadian border to Long Island.
