The US Air Force symbol consists of two main parts. The upper portion which includes the wings that represents the enlisted men and women of the force; and the lower part that embodies the sphere, star and three diamonds. It was introduced in January 2000. Guidelines that outlined appropriate uses for the new Air Force symbol were released March 23. The symbol was first tested on gates and water towers in August.
The Air Force Symbol is the official symbol of the United States Air Force. It honors the heritage of our past and represents the promise of our future. Furthermore, it retains the core elements of our Air Corps heritage, the "Arnold" wings and star with circle, and modernizes them to reflect our air and space force of today and tomorrow. The modern United States Air Force (USAF) symbol that is based on the familiar World War II Henry H. Arnold ("Hap" Arnold) wings is known as the "Hap Arnold wings" or the "Arnold wings." It consists of a pair of wings with a shield in the center and a ribbon banner below, with the words "U.S. Air Force" written on it.
The Hap Arnold wings are used as an insignia to represent the Air Force and its personnel, and are typically worn on uniforms and other forms of official branding. They are named after Henry H. Arnold, who was the first General of the Air Force and played a key role in the development of the Air Force as a separate military branch.
The Hap Arnold wings are often used in conjunction with the Air Force symbol, which is a roundel consisting of a blue circle with a white five-pointed star in the center, surrounded by a white circle with a red border. The symbol represents the sky (blue circle), the guiding principles of the Air Force (white star), and the American flag (white circle with red border).
The Air Force Symbol is registered with the US Patent and Trademark Office. It's registration number is 2,767,190. The Air Force Trademark & Licensing Program enforces the U.S. Air Force's trademark rights by working with Air Force legal counsel and the Department of Justice for instances requiring legal action.
