The nation now had a single maritime service dedicated to saving life at sea and enforcing the nation's maritime laws. The service began to maintain the country's aids to maritime navigation, including operating the nation's lighthouses, when the Lighthouse Service was transferred to the Coast Guard in 1939. Later, in 1946, Congress permanently transferred the Bureau of Marine Inspection and Navigation to the Coast Guard, thereby placing merchant marine licensing and merchant vessel safety under our purview. A 14" Mahogany Plaque - United States Coast Guard Reserve Call for Details 1 800 313 1876 The Coast Guard is one of the oldest organizations of the federal government and, until the Navy Department was established in 1798, it served as the nation's only armed force afloat. The service has continued to protect the nation throughout our long history and have served proudly in every one of the nation's conflicts. The Coast Guard's national defense responsibilities remain one of its most important functions even today. In times of peace the Coast Guard operates as part of the Department of Homeland Security, serving as the nation's front-line agency for enforcing our laws at sea, protecting our coastline and ports, and saving life. In times of war, or on direction of the President, the Coast Guard serves under the Navy Department. Click image for full sized view US Coast Guard Auxiliary - Official Seal Plaque
Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod - Official Seal Plaque In the 1960's, the Coast Guard began searching for a replacement facility, one that could grow as needed and accommodate modern aircraft. In 1968, the Department of Defense agreed to allow the Coast Guard to utilize Otis Air Force Base on Cape Cod for a new Coast Guard Air Station. Air Station Cape Cod was officially established on August 29, 1970. Protecting the coast of the United States from New York City to the Canadian border, Air Station Cape Cod has grown into one of the most active and essential air stations in the service. Air Station Cape Cod crews fly both HH-60J "JayHawk" helicopters and HU-25 "Falcon" jets to perform a variety of Coast Guard missions. Our primary mission, Search and Rescue (SAR), involves the protection of life and property in the offshore areas from the Canadian border to Long Island.
