The Central Security Service (CSS) is an agency of the United States government. It was established by Presidential Directive in 1972 to promote full partnership between the National Security Agency (NSA) and the crypto logic elements of the United States Armed Forces.
The National Security Agency/Central Security Service is America’s crypto logic organization. It coordinates, directs, and performs highly specialized activities to protect U. S. government information systems and produce foreign signals intelligence information. A high technology organization, NSA is on the frontiers of communications and data processing. It is also one of the most important centers of foreign language analysis and research within the government.
In joining together the NSA and CSS, a more unified Department of Defense (DoD) crypto logic effort results. The CSS comprises all U. S. military services—Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines. To further ensure joint operations, the Director of the NSA is also the Chief of the CSS.
