To overcome this problem the sailor's shipmates would construct a box in which to display artifacts and trinkets that symbolized the sailor's accomplishments. This was thought of as creating a "shadow" of the sailor. The box safely contains the sailor's "shadow" until he is ashore, at which time the shadow box can be given to the sailor in a presentation ceremony. Nowadays, a military retirement shadow box is presented not only to Naval personnel but to a wide range of military and EMS men and women in recognition of their service in the Armed Forces and to their Country.
