United States Department of Veterans Affairs

Dept of Vetrans Affairs Donna Kantragas 205x300 United States Department of Veterans AffairsBasically, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is a government-run military veteran benefit system and U.S. government’s second largest department. VA employs nearly 280, 000 people at hundreds of Veterans Affairs medical facilities, clinics and benefits offices and is responsible for administering programs of veterans’ benefits for veterans, their families and survivors.

The United States has the most comprehensive system of assistance for veterans of any nation in the world. The said benefits system traces its roots back to 1636, when the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony were at war with the Pequot Indians. The Pilgrims passed a law which stated that disabled soldiers would be supported by the colony.

The Continental Congress of 1776 encouraged enlistments during the American Revolutionary War by giving out pensions for soldiers who where handicapped. Direct medical and hospital care given to veterans in the early days of the republic was provided by the individual states and communities.

By 1811, the first domiciliary and medical facility for veterans was authorized by the federal government, but not opened until 1834. It was in 19th century when the nation’s veterans assistance program was expanded to cover  the benefits and pensions not only for the veterans, but also their widows and dependents.

As the years go by, the benefit system grew larger and larger. Benefits are getting better and processing getting faster using modern technology to hasten the distribution of benefits.

It was in 1973 when the Veterans Administration Affairs (VA) was established as a Cabinet-level position on March 15, 1989.

President George H.W. Bush hailed the creation of the new department saying, “There is only one place for the veterans of America, in the Cabinet Room, at the table with the President of the United States of America.”

Retirement Plaque

What is Retirement?

Retirement is the point where a person stops employment completely. Many people choose to retire when they are eligible for private or public pension benefits, although some are forced to retire when physical conditions don’t allow the person to work any more (by illness or accident) or as a result of legislation concerning their position. In most countries, the idea of retirement is of recent origin, being introduced during the 19th and 20th centuries. Previously, low life expectancy and the absence of pension arrangements meant that most workers continued to work until death. Germany was the first country to introduce retirement in the 1880s.

Retired workers then support themselves either through pensions or savings. In most cases the money is provided by the government, but sometimes granted only by private subscriptions to mutual funds. In this latter case, subscriptions might be compulsory or voluntary. In some countries an additional “bonus” is granted una tantum (once only) in proportion to the years of work and the average wages; this is usually provided by the employer.

At MilitaryPlaques.Com, we give importance to all our veterans and to our retired military people who took part in serving their country without anything in return. They serve as the new heroes of this generation.

End of decade’s wait—Medal of Honor for Maui Soldier

After 10 years, Army Pfc. Anthony T.  Kahoohanohano will finally receive the Medal of Honor that he deserves. President Barrack Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2010 which included a provision to award the Medal of Honor to Kahoohanohano for his heroic one-man stand act during the Korean War.

He was first posthumously awarded on 1952 the Distinguished Service Cross (the second highest military decoration). For many years, the family together with other Hawaii lawmakers petitioned to upgrade the award that he received and give him the recognition that he deserves.

On September 1, 1951, He single-handedly killed 13 enemy soldiers, two with a shovel, as he covered the withdrawal of his squad.

As his citation reads, Kaloohanohano although wounded in his shoulder, ordered his squad to a secure position as he gathered grenades and returned alone to the machine gun post. As the enemies tried to overpower him, he fought back using the grenades, bullets and then finally with his hands until he was killed.

His courageous stand inspired his comrades, who then launched a counterattack to ward off the enemy.

The Medal of Honor award is expected to be awarded in the White house in the near future. Let us all be inspired by his story , and may his legacy lives on.

Let us honor our heroes. This upcoming Veterans Day, let’s take the opportunity to salute them,  and give out their  highly-deserve recognition especially to the still living . Why not give out Veteran-themed plaque to them?

Aside from the Veteran-themed plaques, Military Plaques also offers Retirement Plaques, Shadow Boxes, Deployment Plaques, and Tail Flashes, which could be personalized according to your preference.

Honor the Veterans, Order now!
