The Coast Guard’s motto that appears on the US Coast Guard Seal is Semper Paratus, meaning “Always Ready.”

The Coast Guard was established on January 28, 1915, and shall be a military service and a branch of the armed forces of the United States at all times. Upon the declaration of war or when the President directs, the Coast Guard operates under the authority of the Department of the Navy.

Key Dates in Coast Guard History

1790: Revenue-Marine (later renamed Revenue Cutter Service) created within the Treasury Department

1915: Revenue Cutter Service combines with the U.S. Lifesaving Service (est. 1848) to create the Coast Guard

1939: U.S. Lighthouse Service (est. 1789) added

1946: Steamboat Inspection Service (est. 1838) added

1967: Coast Guard transferred to Department of Transportation

2003: Coast Guard transferred to Department of Homeland Security

The United States Coast Guard is one of the branch of United States Armed Forces . The United State Coast Guard has over 40150 officers on active duty and is the smallest armed service of the United States. Its mission is to protect the United States, the public and environment concerning the economic and security interest of in any maritime region which also includes the international waters and America’s coast,port  and inland waterways.

The Coast guard’s motto SEMPER PARATUS which is seen on its official seal means  “Always Ready”  . These carries the proud tradition of Coast Guards on whom for one hundred and thirty seven years fought without the dignity of an official emblem. In 1927 , the seal was officially authorized by Honorable Andrew W. Melon, Secretary of the treasury, under President Calvin Coolidge .

The emblem consist of 16 perpendicular stripes, alternate red and white, the union of the ensign to be the arms of the United States in a dark blue on a white field . the 16 stripes symbolizes the number of States in the union when the emblem was made official.
