A Tribute to a Hero
A Tribute to a Hero

Imagine this scene:

During a funeral, Navy SEALs  were lined up in both sides forming two columns. As the coffin passed by at the center, each SEAL  slaps down the gold Trident from his uniform, the trident was then deeply embedded in the wooden coffin.

The slaps was heard across the cemetery…

This was the scene during the funeral of Michael Monsoor.

Michael Monsoor’s Story:

On September 29 2006, Ramadi, Iraq — a member of the elite branch of Navy called SEAL (stands for Sea, Air and Land) sacrificed his life to save his comrades.

Mike Monsoor was part of the overwatch security position, together with three other SEALs and eight Iraqi soldiers, when a live grenade was thrown to the rooftop where they are positioned. In a split second decision, Mike Monsoor smothered his body to the grenade and absorbed the main impact from the blast. He saved three of the comrades who were with him.

But what is more outstanding in this selfless act is that with the way the overwatch position was arranged, Michael was the only one who could have possibly saved himself since he was near the entry and exit point, instead he still chose to sacrifice himself for the sake of others.

Honoring Heroes

On April 8, 2008 former President George Bush awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously to Michael A. Monsoor and on October, 2008 the Secretary of Navy Donald C. Winter announced that DDG-1001, the second ship in the Zumwalt class of destroyers would be named Michael Monsoor to honor the valor of Monsoor.
