The US Virgin Islands is a group of islands in the Carribean located in the insular area of United States. The US Virgin Islands is consisting of main islands namely: St. Croix (“Twin City”), St. John (“Love City”), St. Thomas (“Rock City”) and Water Island (‘Small City”).
The Great Seal of the US Virgin Islands was designed by Mitch Davis. The designed shows the following:
- Three major islands of US Virgin Islands: St.Croix, St. Thomas and St.John.
- The sugar mill – to represent St. Croix, which was the center of agricultural productivity of the island’s history.
- The Legislative Building of St.Thomas- to embody the seat of government and capital of the United States Virgin Islands.
- The Annaberg Ruins- to represent St.John, this represents the island’s role on the production of sugar and the slave uprising.
- Two Flags – the Dannaberg Flag and United States Flag, which shows the transfer of Islands from Denmark to the United States.
- Boat in the harbor- represents the importance of the islands in the interstate and international commerce.
- Yellow Breast bird perched in the Yellow Cedar- the island’s national bird and the island’s national flower.
- The motto inscribed “United in Pride and Hope” – to show harmony in the islands despite different backgrounds of the settlers or natives which enabled them to form one united community.
The main purpose of the seal of US Virgin Islands is to show the pride, history, culture of the United States Virgin Islands. Each detail was carefully thought to fully embody the islands.
