US Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May. It is a day of remembrance for U.S. men and women who have died in nation’s service.

It is originally called as Decoration Day. The alternative name of “Memorial Day” was first used in 1882. It did not become more common until after World War II, and was not declared the official name by Federal law until 1967.

Many observed this holiday by visiting cemeteries and memorials. Another tradition is to fly the flag of the United States at half-staff from dawn until noon local time. Volunteers often place American flags on each grave site at National Cemeteries.

It is also a national holiday in American Samoa, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands.

The Moment of Remembrance is a step in the right direction to returning the meaning back to the day. What is needed is a full return to the original day of observance. Set aside one day out of the year for the nation to get together to remember, reflect and honor those who have given their all in service to their country.

MilitaryPlaques.Com supports and salutes all military people!
