USS Barry DDG-52

USS Barry (DDG-52) is named after the “Father of the American Navy” — Commodore John Barry. The ship is an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer which was commissioned in 1992.

As of 2008, Barry is one the three ships to have won the prestigious Battenberg Cup three times. (Battenberg Cup is given annually as a symbol of excellence to the best ship/submarine in the United States Navy Atlantic Fleet). In 2004 Barry also received the Arleigh Burke Fleet Trophy as being the most improved ship in the Atlantic Fleet.

USS Barry recently marked the centennial celebration of the Great White Fleet. Over 100 years ago the “Great White Fleet” made history; it made a 43,000 mile journey that included 20 port calls on six different continents that lasted from December 1907 until February 1909.

The USS Barry struck port in Malta, one of the locations that the historic Great White Fleet visited; this is to commemorate the anniversary of the historical event.

How to Fold a Flag for a Shadow Box

A Shadow Box is not only intended as a memorabilia of one’s Military career but  it also serve as way to honor and recognize the recipient’s service.

Medals, awards, badges, insignias or items that signify the history of a personnel’s career is included in a Shadow Box. The National flag is also often and a good addition in a Shadow Box’s content.

The National Flag placed in a Shadow Box symbolizes that our country benefited from the loyal service of the recipient of the shadow box. United States has a special way of folding a flag that is reserved for the county alone. For Shadow Boxes, it is typical that flags are folded in the appearance of a tri-cornered hat, symbolic of the hats worn by colonial soldiers during the War of Independence.

Here are the steps on how to properly fold a flag for a Shadow Box:

  • First, hold the flag waist-high with another person so that its surface is parallel to the ground.
  • Fold the lower half of the stripe section lengthwise over the field of stars, holding the bottom and top edges securely.
  • Fold the flag again lengthwise with the blue field on the outside.
  • Make a triangular fold by bringing the striped corner of the folded edge to meet the open or top edge of the flag.
  • Turn the outer or end point inward, parallel to the open edge, to form a second triangle.
  • The triangular folding is continued until the entire length of the flag is folded in this manner.

Note: When the flag is completely folded, only the triangular blue field of stars should be visible.

SHIELD: Paleways of thirteen pieces argent and gules, a chief azure; upon the breast of an American eagle displayed holding in his dexter talon an olive branch proper and in his sinister a bundle of thirteen arrows gray, and in his beak a gray scroll inscribed “E PLURIBUS UNUM” sable.

CREST: Behind and above the eagle a radiating glory or, on which appears an arc of thirteen cloud puffs gray, and a constellation of thirteen mullets gray.

The Seal of the Vice President of the United States shall consist of the Coat of Arms encircled by the words “Vice President of the United States.”

The design of the Seal of the Vice President is almost the same as the Seal of the President, with a few differences.

  • There is no ring of stars
  • The clouds are gray
  • The stars are gray instead of ardent
  • The scroll is gray instead of white
  • The arrows are gray
