The US Army Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM) was organized on 1 January 1977 as a result of the Army's Intelligence Organization and Stationing Study (IONS).  INCOM's three main elements are drawn from the elements which were originally combined to form INACOM in 1977: the US Army Security Agency (USASA); US Army Intelligence Agency (USAINTA); and a number of different intelligence production agencies, most of which had been under the Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence (ACSI) for direct control.

Army Major Commands such as the US Army Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM) located at Ft Belvoir, Virginia conducts dominant intelligence, security and information operations for commanders and national decision-makers, and provides war fighters with the seamless intelligence needed to understand and dominate the battlefield. In addition, the Army warfighting force has a sound and proven intelligence architecture designed to support its commanders well into the 21st century. At corps level, the Senior Intelligence Officer (SIO), the G2, and an organic corps Military Intelligence (MI) Brigade provide intelligence support. The MI Brigade provides support to the corps across the full range of intelligence and counterintelligence disciplines and functions.

Army Military Intelligence accomplishes its mission in close coordination with the other Services (Air Force, Navy, and Marines) and with national intelligence agencies to ensure that ground component commanders and soldiers know what enemy forces they will face before, during, and after deployments. In addition, Army MI works to protect our nation's secrets, to protect the technology overmatch that the United States enjoys in the world, and to contribute to the Homeland Defense.
